Ingredient Breakdown

Pharmaceutical-grade Methylene Blue

aqueous solution

The Lux Vita Methylene Blue Drops deliver pharmaceutical-grade Methylene Blue in an aqueous solution, allowing precise low-dose administration. The liquid format is essential for this compound — dose titration at the microgram to milligram level is not practically achievable in capsule form. The product is listed for users with existing knowledge of Methylene Blue's pharmacology and a clear rationale for its use.

Purity and Grade

The grade of Methylene Blue matters enormously. Industrial-grade and laboratory-grade Methylene Blue contain heavy metal impurities and are not appropriate for human consumption. Lux Vita uses USP (United States Pharmacopeia) or equivalent pharmaceutical-grade Methylene Blue exclusively. Every batch is tested for purity and heavy metal content.

How to Use

Typical Supplemental Dose: 0.5–4mg/kg body weight start at the lowest effective dose

Methylene Blue exhibits a biphasic, hormetic dose-response. At low doses (in the range of 0.5–4mg/kg), it demonstrates dosing instruction in human and animal studies. At high doses, it becomes inhibitory and toxic. This dose dependency is more pronounced than with almost any other supplement compound. The drops format and the precise dropper allow the user to begin at the lowest effective dose and adjust incrementally which is the only responsible way to approach this compound.

The Science

What Is Methylene Blue?

Methylene Blue is a synthetic compound with a long and unusual history. It was first synthesised in 1876 and became the first synthetic drug ever used in medicine, initially as a treatment for malaria. It was later used as an antiseptic and as a diagnostic agent in clinical settings. More recently, a growing body of research has examined its potential applications in cognitive function, mitochondrial health, and neuroprotection.

It is important to state at the outset that Methylene Blue occupies a different category to the other Lux Vita products. It is a potent compound with real pharmacological activity, meaningful drug interactions, and risks that must be understood before use. This page is intended to inform, not to encourage uninvestigated use.

Mitochondrial Electron Transport

Methylene Blue is a redox cycling compound it can accept electrons and donate them, cycling between its oxidised (blue) and reduced (colourless) forms. Within the mitochondria, it acts as an alternative electron carrier in the electron transport chain, effectively bypassing complexes I and III which are common sites of dysfunction and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. This 'electron shuttle' mechanism has been proposed as a basis for improved mitochondrial efficiency and reduced oxidative stress.

Hormetic Effect

Methylene Blue demonstrates a classic hormetic dose-response curve meaning low doses produce beneficial effects while high doses can be toxic. The effective and safe supplemental range is extremely narrow, typically cited as 0.5–4mg per kg body weight. This is not a compound where more is better. The research on cognitive and mitochondrial benefits is concentrated in the low-dose range.

Cognitive Function

A study published in Redox Biology (2016) found that low-dose Methylene Blue improved memory retention and short-term memory in healthy adults in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Functional MRI data showed increased activity in regions associated with sustained attention and short-term memory. The doses used in this trial were significantly lower than those used in clinical or medical contexts.

Neuroprotection

Preclinical research has investigated Methylene Blue in models of traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease. Its ability to reduce mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress makes it theoretically relevant in conditions driven by these mechanisms. A pharmaceutical derivative, LMTM (leuco-methylthioninium bis(hydromethanesulfonate)), has been studied in Alzheimer's trials with mixed results at higher doses.

Antimicrobial and Antiviral Properties

Methylene Blue has demonstrated broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity in research settings, particularly when combined with light (photodynamic therapy). This has limited relevance to oral supplementation but is part of the compound's broader pharmacological profile.

Critical Safety Information

This section is not optional reading. Methylene Blue has significant drug interactions and contraindications that must be understood before use.

Serotonin syndrome risk: Methylene Blue inhibits monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) and can cause potentially fatal serotonin syndrome when combined with serotonergic drugs, including SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, tramadol, and others. This interaction is well-documented and serious.

G6PD deficiency: Individuals with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency should not take Methylene Blue. It can cause haemolytic anaemia in this population.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Blue discolouration: Methylene Blue will temporarily discolour urine and sometimes saliva blue or green. This is expected and harmless at low doses but can be alarming if unexpected.

Do not exceed recommended doses: The therapeutic window is narrow. Higher doses do not produce greater cognitive benefit and increase risk.
