Why These Two Work Together

Two Layers of Brain Health

A neuron needs two things to function well over time: adequate energy to perform its tasks, and structural maintenance to survive and remain connected. NMN addresses the energy side neurons are metabolically expensive cells, and declining NAD+ directly reduces the efficiency of the mitochondria that power them. Lion's Mane addresses the structural side NGF supports the growth, maintenance, and survival of the neurons themselves, and the density of the synaptic connections between them. These are not competing interventions. They operate at different levels of the same system.

Shared Neuroprotective Direction

Both compounds have demonstrated neuroprotective properties in preclinical research, albeit through different mechanisms. NAD+ precursors reduce neuronal vulnerability to oxidative stress and support the repair of DNA damage a key driver of age-related neuronal loss. Lion's Mane reduces neuroinflammation and supports neurogenesis in the hippocampus, the brain region most associated with memory and most vulnerable to age-related decline. Together, they address neuroprotection from both the metabolic and structural directions.

Cholinergic System Support

The cholinergic system which uses acetylcholine as its primary neurotransmitter is central to attention, learning, and memory. It is also one of the earliest systems affected in age-related cognitive decline. NGF is critically important to the maintenance of cholinergic neurons. Adequate NAD+ supports the energy metabolism these neurons depend on. The Cognitive Stack therefore has a specific relevance to the most at-risk cognitive system in the ageing brain.

Timing Compatibility

Both products are taken in the morning. NMN has been associated with wakefulness-promoting effects if taken in the evening; Lion's Mane is neutral on this dimension. Morning administration of both is consistent with their mechanisms and with good sleep hygiene.

Who This Stack Is For

  • Adults over 35 prioritising long-term cognitive health and mental sharpness
  • Knowledge workers, executives, or anyone whose professional performance depends on sustained cognitive function
  • Those with a family history of cognitive decline who are investing early in preventative support
  • Anyone who has noticed early signs of cognitive fatigue, word retrieval difficulties, or reduced mental stamina
  • Users who understand that meaningful cognitive support requires patience and consistency, not quick effects
